Unpack Your Stuff!
Most likely, we have all been at the airport and have observed travelers having their bags weighed in at check-in. Many times those bags are over the weight limit and travelers are forced to open their bags on the spot and ‘unpack their stuff” The travelers are challenged to determine what is really important to take on their trip and what can be left behind. The “trip of life”, presents the same challenge. We all own a lot of stuff! Some of that stuff is a burden and weighs us down. Think old relationships that were not handled well ,or did not end on a positive note. Are we still carrying the weight of those relationships around and need to unpack them? Are we holding on to memories of a job that did not go well and are those memories weighing us down? Unpack all of this stuff! Release all that you have outgrown and stop living in the past.
This all sounds simple. Just “unpack your stuff” and all will be good. The question is how? One way to “unpack” your stuff, is a method I call, The System-A Four Step Path To Positive Change.
Journaling-this is a great way to put all of your thoughts down on paper. Positive thoughts, grateful thoughts, areas for improvement. Lot’s of stuff! Once the stuff you want to unpack is written in a journal, you have taken the first positive step to unpacking.
Visualization-the second step in the process is visualization. Visualize in your mind how your life will look without the burden and heavy of issues you have been struggling with. You can now visualize a new positive life, which you and all people deserve.
Goal Set-start by writing down one goal you would like to accomplish in this unpacking process. Be specific and targeted with each of your goals.
Actions Steps-the last step in this process is listing positive action steps you will begin to put into place, to unpack this negative stuff in your life. Going back to our example of getting past a lost love, one action step might be to think about a positive relationship you are currently a part of , or family members who are in strong relationships. Another action step might to explore, is being more outgoing around co-workers, neighbors and new acquaintances. This step can help you seek out and develop new relationships.
“Unpacking your stuff”, can be a challenging task. It takes time, perseverance, and the desire to improve the quality of your life and move forward in a positive manner. The main point is, don’t allow yourself to carry around unproductive, burdensome aspects in your life. It is time to “unpack your stuff”!
