Walking On The Opposite Side Of The Street.

During the beginning of the Covid pandemic, gyms and workout facilities were forced to close. The closing of these facilities and many other types of businesses forced all of us to get creative on how we lived our lives. I used walking through my city, as one replacement form of exercise. Like many people, I am a creature of habit. In one residential area near me, I always walked on the same side of the street. This was a simple habit and I didn’t give this path too much thought. One day for no apparent reason during the same walk I shifted to the opposite side of the street. With that simple move, so many senses opened-up. All of a sudden I was exposed to so many new things. My senses were literally “on fire”! I noticed different placement of windows on the houses, the pitch of the roofline, flowers on the side of the house. All of these sights that I never experienced, due to being stuck in my old pattern and routine.

While taking these “opposite side of the street” walks, I started to think about other things that I did over and over again, consciously, or unconsciously. Were some of these habits and patterns holding me back? Were they limiting my view and scope of the world! Was I afraid to try new things, or look at all aspects of life from a different perspective? Was I becoming complacent and stuck in my “comfort zone”?

Many people have used the phrase, ”do something every day that scares you” I am not talking about activities that could put you in danger. I am referring to new activities, thought processes etc. Ask yourself, are you stuck in the same habits, afraid to try new things? Are you afraid of failing? With new exciting experiences and possibilities, the only failure, is not trying.
